Falla, Manuel de

(November 23, 1876 - November 14, 1946)

He opens a new page in Spanish music thanks to his covers of popular themes (which he modified at his convenience) and the impressionist influences he’s received from Debussy and Ravel.

It’s after having heard a Beethoven symphony that Manuel de Falla starts a composer career. A student of José Trago for the piano and of Felipe Pedrell, Manuel de Falla composes many little pieces for piano: waltzes, caprices, nocturnes, Andalusian serenades… before composing large-scale works.

He wins a composition prize at the Académie des beaux-arts, which will allow him to go to Paris where he will meet Ravel, Albéniz and Ricardo Viñes who will deeply influence his compositions.
