Calendar of premieres for January

A start of the year full of inspired creations

On 19 January, the Grand Théâtre de Provence in Aix will welcome one of its native artists, the pianist Célimène Daudet, for a concertante premiere by Christian Rivet with the Orchestre des Pays de Savoie conducted by Nicolas Chalvin, its current musical director (before the arrival of Pieter-Jelle de Boer).

The work of Christian Rivet, here in good company (alongside Mozart's concerto no.21 and Haydn's “The Bear” symphony), tells "the story of a future designed in the style of Dos Passos with, as a backdrop, literary simultaneism. A story to be detached as closely as possible according to the dotted lines of some traces and other reminiscences" (says the composer). Entitled Brisé d’arêtes et bord du vent, this concerto will be told in six "short stories", "countless reflections that hold a night in suspense". Not only a piece of music, the work is also, again according to its creator, an "invitation to extend the words of the composer by filling the breaths of silence to share the emotion that the latter expresses. These blanks here and there are resonators, extensions towards a more universal sphere. "

Two days later, on 21 January, the Belle Saison at the Théâtre de Coulommiers, renowned for its acoustic properties, has entrusted a commission to Thomas Enhco for a sextet for piano and woodwind quintet (the young Quintette Asian). This will mark the return to the stage of the young and immensely gifted jazzman and composer, his premieres gathering an increasingly numerous public. As a preview, he gives us this inspiring introduction: "After 2020 which has turned the world upside down entire and silenced concert halls, I face my piano and blank sheets of music paper, and I feel that the act of composing is not the same as usual. Firstly, calm prevails. Is this because I spent most of the year far from cities, stations, airports and the hustle, closer to nature and the ocean, and most often on my own? In any case, I want long and pure melodic lines, warm harmonies and a slow, ample and collected rhythm.

I am fortunate to have the opportunity to write for wind quintet and piano! The timbres of the woodwinds always remind me of nature at its most colourful and fragrant, and the piano is the instrument with which I express myself better than with words. In this work, which I see as a dialogue between these two entities, I imagine a series of paintings alternating between sets created by the winds in which the piano is a wandering character (while improvising), and sets painted by the piano, in which the woodwinds are invited individually to sing and dance." Come one and all to discover the fabulous Belle Saison on 21 January!

Unless you decide that same evening to go instead to the Paris Philharmonie, where the Ensemble Intercontemporain, conducted by Léo Warynski, will premiere Le Rite de la nuit noire by François Meïmoun,, a world premiere inspired by Antonin Artaud (a "classic" in the composer’s repertoire) and his trip to Mexico - a unique opportunity to meet the knowledgeable François Meïmoun and to question him about his work and more: the interview can be viewed below.
