Philippe Hersant - La Lumière et l'ombre

At the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Chœur de l'Orchestre de Paris, Lionel Sow, its Musical Director, asked Philippe Hersant for the composition of a new piece close to the form of the Te Deum by Berlioz, work that will be associated next 21 January, to the Philharmonie de Paris, to the world premiere of La Lumière et l'Ombre by the Orchestre de Paris conducted by Bertrand de Billy.

Benjamin Attahir's new composition, Et nous tournions autour de ces fontaines hallucinées inspired by the Fontaine Stravinsky closed to Ircam in Paris, is to have its world premiere on 10 January 2017 at the Köln Philharmonie by Ensemble InterContemporain conducted by Gregor A. Mayrhofer.

“Marvellous, wonderful, splendid: you are a genius!” George Gershwin declared to Tansman one evening in 1927 after the triumphant premiere of his Piano Concerto No. 2 in Boston. The piece, which was dedicated to Charlie Chaplin, was reprised by pianist Robert Schmitz at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles with great success the following summer, with an audience of almost 20,000 people. In the absence of the composer, the cheers were aimed at the dedicatee who was obliged to go up on stage.

EXORDIUM - PART ONE OF A LARGE ORCHESTRAL CYCLE

After a fertile collaboration with the Gewandhaus Leipzig, Oscar Bianchi embraces the challenges of orchestra again, this time deliberately as a space of meanings, meanings which develop only through crossings and thresholds. To tackle such extensive topic, Oscar Bianchi is working on a large orchestral cycle, which will be based on the Art of Rhetorics. As the overture of this cycle Exordium will receive its world premiere on November the 24th at LAC with the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana under the direction of Markus Poschner.

AUBE (DAWN) BY JEAN-FRÉDÉRIC NEUBURGER ON TOUR IN ISRAEL

Almost one year after its world premiere by the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Christoph von Dohnanyi, Jean-Frédéric Neuburger’s orchestral piece Aube  (Dawn) will be touring in Israel, from Tel Aviv to Haifa for 5 performances with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Alexander Briger from the 9th up to the 17th of November.

UN CIELO Y EL OTRO: Choreographic play by Diana Theocharidis, based on the original music by Pascal Dusapin. A choreographic project revolving around his studies for piano, some violoncello pieces, and a Pascal Dusapin premiere of Slackline.

In September many of his pieces will be premiered at the Festival Musica in Strasbourg, Alberto Posadas will also be at the Académie de composition of the festival, just before being invited professor in residence at the Berlin Wisseschaftkolleg.

In this piece the instrumental ensemble plays a revelatory role; it echoes the memory of a voice. It thus uncovers fragments of a buried memory: a memory that is painful, without a doubt, if we are to believe the heightened tension it causes between the singer and the ensemble. There is no obvious story, only scraps of lost memories: we imagine that something very violent happened in the past, something that everyone was eager to forget. Throughout the piece we witness the gradual appearance of acoustic images that aim to reconstruct the puzzle of memory, and that gradually disappear again into silence.

François Meïmoun is an unclassifiable character: musicologist, arranger and, of course, composer. As his current movements show, the latter component is playing an increasingly large role on his journey. Chamber music has an important place, alongside a quartet with piano and a string quintet; his committed approach to the string quartet genre can be read within. Meïmoun’s aesthetic offers a subtle combination of timbral sophistication and formal intelligence, which are components that can also be found in his Viola Concerto. We are also looking forward to hearing his piece for piano four hands – an instrument Meïmoun is very familiar with as he plays himself.

After his orchestration of the « Sonate » by Ravel, warmly welcomed in Lyon, Yan Maresz is ready for a new revolution with the harp playing. In his concerto, Répliques, he worked on the amplification and the electronics added to this instrument. A game on the double, also served by the orchestra. The harp as you never heard it!
