Yan Maresz - "Soli"

Premiere of Soli by Yan Maresz at the Ircam ManiFeste Festival

Jean-François Heisser, widely praised for his sparkling and warm piano style, will perform the premiere of Yan Maresz’s Soli on 25 June, a "duet" for piano and electronics broadcast via the IKO system.

"Thanks to its 20 faces, the IKO icosahedron allows listeners to inhabit space in all directions similar to an instrumental source.

We are therefore in the presence of what is meant to be a real duet, and not an instrumental part accompanied by electronics," explains the composer, adding "the projection and radiation of electronic sound by the IKO isn't the only indication of a duo; the writing was conceived in equal measure from the very beginning of the work’s development."

Both precise and brilliant at the same time, Yan Maresz’s style of composition, capable of subliming such varied timbres as the trumpet or the harp, will here be put at the service of a "pianistic writing, willingly subtle, lively and often monodic, exploring the expressive potential of the Vuza canons and other formal calculated structures. The electronic part, based on the same elements, is built from various piano sounds (ordinary, prepared, etc) as well as well as synthetic sounds generated by a synthetic control tool through polyrhythmic models. These sound constructions can be either preconceived or generated instantly, but in both cases the electronic part plays "with" the piano, one listening to the other..."
