The work "Spirales" by Éric Tanguy composed in 2016 and commissioned by ECHO and the Philharmonie de Paris will be premiered in Italy on 19 October in Bergamo, at Società del Quartetto di Bergamo by Suzana Bartal on piano and Benedict Kloeckner on cello.
Here is some words about the work by the composer:
Composed in 2016, the work is the result of a commission from ECHO and the Philharmonie de Paris.
When the idea arose of writing once again for the cello and piano, I immediately thought of a score that would stand in contrast with the meditative and lyrical character of my two earlier works for this ensemble:
“Nocturne” (1995) and “Evocations” (2010).
I therefore designed a music structure, in one piece, with a particularly lively character and a fast tempo. However, if this tempo imposes a certain virtuosity on behalf of the musicians, I did not try to make this a work of demonstrative music either. The idea of the spirals, hence "Spirals", imposed itself through the writing, through the interplay of intertwining and the dialogue between the two instruments.
Harmonically, the work follows my modal research, which has characterised the musical language of my works for more than twenty years. "Spirales" is humbly dedicated to Edgar Moreau and Pierre-Yves Hodique.
