Joan Magrané Figuera - "Deux études en hoquetus"

Caution, moment of sensational discovery ahead... which will be echoed in the new festival conceived by Renaud Capuçon at the Grand Théâtre de Provence in Aix (Nouveaux Horizons) from 17 to 19 October with a world premiere of "Deux études en hoquetus" by Joan Magrané Figuera with Gérard Caussé on viola and Anna Egholm on violin.

Here is text from the composer about the work:

Starting with the idea of hiccups (hoquetus in Latin), a medieval musical technique that allows us to create a entire rhythmic polyphony, a sobbing and living music where the voices cross each other and interrupt each other offbeat, I imagined two pieces: first a relatively square, aggressive and wild music, almost animalistic (with these moments of rest, too) and, after, another more continuous and expressive, more human perhaps, in which the instruments find their space to sing (even if the hiccups, the more or less sudden alternation of voices, continue to dominate the whole work).
