Neuburger / Hersant: two Asian premieres

On May 2019 will take place two Durand Salabert Eschig's premieres in Asia. 

  •  on May 3 at Singapour, Aube by Jean-Frédéric Neuburger with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra conducted by Pascal Rophé (information),
  • on May 8 at Hong Kong, Patmos by Philippe Hersant with the Paris Mozart Orchestra conducted by Claire Gibault (information).

In this piece I tried to arouse emotions related to the mystery of the nascent morning. The orchestration evokes many elements of nature -the wind, the fall of dewdrops, thunder, the noise of insects…-, playing a lot on the contrasts.

It is also for me a study on the nuance crescendo-diminuendo, present both in the macro-structure and the micro-structure of the composition : this nuance is for me particularly representative of nature, where everything emerges, grows to a certain point and disappears.

Patmos

I composed this work for string orchestra after reading a collection of poems by the Transylvanian writer Lorand Gaspar, from whom I borrowed the title: Patmos. I first discovered this poet through my friend and colleague Jean-Louis Florentz, who sadly passed away prematurely a few years ago. On the score of his final work for orchestra, Qsar Ghilâne, he had written down several verses from the collection of poems: this is what motivated me to read the entire book. Moved by this discovery, I wanted to pay a musical tribute to both the poet and my lost friend.

My work is built around several bars taken from Qsar Ghilâne: a brief passage, performed only by the stringed instruments, which immediately struck me with its eloquent and fervent simplicity. This motif, very present throughout the work, is gradually mixed with the idea of a carillon (those of the Monastery of St John in Patmos) and memories of orthodox choirs, within an atmosphere that I imagined eternally serene and religious.
