2009 – 10th Anniversary of Marcel Landowski’s death

It’s been now 10 years that Marcel Landowski has left us (December 23, 1999). Éditions Salabert pays tribute to this huge man who devoted his life to culture and especially music.

« I try to remain faithful to all I ever wanted to do: be a composer » here is the way Marcel Landowski defined himself.

Musician, exceptional and charming man, architect of French musical life revival, Marcel Landowski left us ten years ago.

His official important and heavy duties he holds didn’t prevent him from writing music, notably his Messe de l'Aurore (1977), two symphonies (1963-64), Un enfant appelle (1979), written for the cellist Mstislav Rostropovitch and his wife, soprano Galina Vichnevskaïa, La Prison (1981), Galina (1995) and the opera Montségur (1985).

As a composer, Marcel Landowski confirmed himself as independent, at the same time open to the XXth century language and recalcitrant to avant-gardes he objected to. As administrator, he played a fundamental role in the reorganization of French musical life: he is the one who created region orchestras, the renewal of lyrical art and restructuring of musical education in conservatories.

Many concerts will take place this year dedicated to Marcel Landowski
