Editor in chief: Denis Herlin

Published with the support of Musica Gallica (French Ministry of Culture and Communication, Francis and Mica Salabert Foundation), the CNRS and the Bibliothèque Nationale de France

Founded at the instigation of François Lesure, editor in chief from 1985 to 2001, this monumental edition of the complete works of Claude Debussy comprises 34 volumes, arranged in six series:

The important body of unpublished works as well as Debussy's many revisions of his published scores demonstrates the necessity for some truly critical work. In each volume the musical text is preceded by a foreword outlining its genesis; it is followed by critical notes describing the sources and the methodology for establishing the text. Preceding the appendix, variants are listed, the most important of which are indicated by references in bold characters. All known sources (sketches, manuscripts, proofs, editions, annotated copies, correspondence, historical recordings) have been systematically consulted and the proposed musical text may be considered definitive. When there are two versions of the same work, equally complete but including significant differences, both are published.
When two versions differ solely in an isolated passage, the earlier is given in the appendix. Works hitherto unpublished and incomplete works will be published in so far as the condition of the sources allows. The scientific editor's approach is commented upon in detail in the critical notes.
